Behavior Basics
Our approach to problem behavior is based in the highly-effective, research-based science of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). ABA emphasizes changes that we can make in a person's environment to improve behavior and teach new skills.
Examples of changes in the environment that might improve behavior are:
When using ABA, we also focus on lots of observation of problem behavior and the specific situations in which it occurs. For example, does problem behavior happen at a certain time of day? During certain activities? With certain people? The process of Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) takes these factors into account when making a plan to improve problem behavior. We take notes on each instance of problem behavior using an "ABC Chart" that tells us the date, time, and circumstances in which each problem behavior occurred. Often, we will use this information to teach a child with autism a way to communicate his or her needs without resorting to problem behavior. Please visit the other pages on our site for tips and support on using these methods to help your child or students with autism.
