A token economy is a visual representation of progress toward a goal. It is basically a point chart, in which a child earns points (or tokens) for doing certain things. A few examples of ways to use a token economy are:

A token economy is a visual representation of progress toward a goal. It is basically a point chart, in which a child earns points (or tokens) for doing certain things. A few examples of ways to use a token economy are:
- Giving a child a sticker on a chart each for each minute he focuses on his homework or schoolwork. When the chart is full, he gets to watch a YouTube video.
- Giving a child a checkmark on a chart each time she follows your request to do something (put on shoes, put away toys, etc.). When the chart is full, she gets 15 extra minutes of video game time.
- Giving a child a marble in a jar each time he uses his words when frustrated instead of hitting. When the jar is full, he gets to pick a prize.
- Giving a child tokens every 30 seconds (or more often) while waiting for something. This rewards the child for waiting patiently when he or she needs to. See an example of this in the second video below.
